The below table sets out the estimated cost of reducing prescription charges in increments of €0.50 to €0.00 for each cohort:

This estimation is based on activity as reported by the Primary Care Reimbursement Service for January through April 2025.

These costings do not take account of changes in demographics, eligibility (e.g., changes in the number of medical card holders), or how a reduction in prescription charges may impact claimant behaviour.
