The Department of the Taoiseach prioritises building and sustaining a dynamic, agile and responsive workforce that supports the Taoiseach and the Government.
Currently, the Department structure includes:
the British and Northern Ireland Affairs Division and Shared Island Unit which supports the Taoiseach and the Government in fostering reconciliation and developing relationships on the island of Ireland and between UK and Ireland and supports implementation of the Government’s commitment to work with all communities and traditions on the island to build consensus around a shared future on the island underpinned by the Good Friday Agreement.
the EU and International Division which supports the Taoiseach on matters related to our membership of the European Union and on international affairs generally, including in wider Europe. It supports his work as a member of the European Council and his bilateral and multilateral engagements with European and international counterparts. It provides analysis and advice on related issues and works to ensure a coherent whole-of-government approach.
the Economic Division, including the Economic Policy Unit, the Housing and Infrastructure Unit, the Climate Action Unit and the Economic Development and Digital Unit. The Division advises the Taoiseach on policy aimed at promoting a sustainable and resilient economy with a particular focus on jobs, competitiveness, labour market, enterprise, skills issues, and digital policy. The Division also maintains an overview of important sectoral or policy issues with wider economic impacts, including housing, infrastructure, energy and climate action.
the Social Policy and Public Service Reform Division which supports the Taoiseach on social policy and public service reform and related matters. The Division includes the Northeast Inner City Initiative, the Dublin City Taskforce, the Child Poverty and Well-being Programme Office, and the Programme Board on Building More Integrated Approaches to Local Area Challenges. The Division also has responsibility for supporting the Taoiseach in relation to migration, health, social affairs, justice, and education, as well as working on Civil Service Renewal, including through the Civil Service Management Board. The Division also has the Departmental oversight role for the National Economic and Social Council.
the Corporate Services Division which comprises the Corporate Affairs Unit with responsibility for delivering financial, procurement, travel management, human resources, ICT, accommodation and other support services to the Department and its employees within a robust governance framework; the Protocol and Civic Policy Unit with responsibility for State protocol, including protocol for the Taoiseach, organisation of State and official functions and assisting with inward visits by Heads of State or Government; and the Government Information Service with responsibility for providing the Taoiseach, the Government and the Department with press office and communications services.
the Government Secretariat which co-ordinates the business of Government meetings, including the preparation of agendas, the circulation of memoranda and the communication of decisions. It also provides liaison with the Office of the President. The Parliamentary Liaison Unit and the National Security Analysis Centre also fall under the remit of the Assistant Secretary for this Division.
The structure of the Department and the resourcing of business units within the Department will continue to evolve to reflect the priorities outlined in the Programme for Government. Indeed, the Department is currently in the process of establishing a dedicated Disability Unit.
