As Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail & Ports, I wish to advise that access to transport for people with disabilities is a multifaceted issue, involving work carried out by multiple Government departments. Recently, as one specific personal transport response, the Department of Transport has been tasked with developing a new vehicle adaptation scheme, in the context of broader Government consideration of integrated transport and mobility supports for those with a disability.
The principles and parameters of the new scheme will be developed over the coming months. The Department’s priority, in introducing this new scheme, is to provide supports for disabled drivers and passengers which are fit for purpose, and which are also equitable, effective and efficient, as well as being proportionate and appropriate to applicants' needs.
