I understand that the Dublin Airport Environmental Working Group met with daa in February 2025 and while the Group has not contacted my office directly I can provide the following update in relation to PFAS at Dublin Airport.
Legacy PFAS contamination has been identified at Dublin Airport, primarily due to the historic use of AFFF firefighting foam. Since 2013, the firefighting foam used by Dublin Airport Fire Service is an ICAO approved foam classified as fluorine free, and does not contain any PFAS compounds.
daa advise they are taking all appropriate steps to manage and address this issue, including hiring expert consultants in since 2021 to monitor, assess and identify potential risks arising from the legacy usage of PFAS at Dublin Airport. The results of a 28 month monitoring period were released in April 2024 and published on daa’s website, along with a Frequently Asked Questions document providing detailed information on the situation.
daa also advise that they are engaging fully with the relevant regulatory bodies on this matter including the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Environment, Climate and Communications, and the local authority.
