91. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the cost of equalising rates for three and six month motor tax payments with the rate of the twelve month payment. [28114/25]

The table below details the additional amounts derived from the collection of motor tax payments as a result of the surcharge for periodic payments in the last three full calendar years. It is important to note that more frequent motor tax transactions incur a higher cost on the Department of Transport to administer, which is offset by the surcharge
The rates payable are 28.25% (quarterly) or 55.5% (half yearly) of the full annual rate of duty. Hence the annual cost of equalising rates for three and six month motor tax payments with the rate of the twelve month payment is approximately €35 million per annum. Decisions on the rates of motor tax applicable, including surcharges, are a matter for the Minister for Finance to determine and are to be considered in overall budgetary context.
