Science Foundation Ireland stands dissolved as of 1 August 2024 under the Research and Innovation Act, 2024. All functions and funding for the agency have been transferred to the new competitive research and innovation funding agency Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland, which was established on the same date.

Grants to Science Foundation Ireland were made in two ways (1) capital grants for the purposes of research and research infrastructure grants and (2) voted current expenditure allocated under the annual estimates process and which is utilised for current expenditure inclusive of administration, pay and pensions and other running costs of the organisation. Capital funding for the purposes of research funding calls may also be obtained through co-funding with other national funding and research performing organisations.

Annual expenditure for Science Foundation Ireland, including a breakdown of the expenditure related to administration, operations and promotion expenses (including education and public engagement) and grants paid is publicly available in the Annual Report and Financial Statements which were published and are available on the agency website for up to 2022 at www.sfi.ie/research-news/publications/annual-reports/.
