Preparations for the development of a National Diabetes Registry are currently underway. The development of the registry will have a long-term benefit on patient care by facilitating the provision of reliable data regarding diabetes in the population. This will enable health service planners and frontline staff to develop and deliver future services in the most efficient manner within available resources.

Funding has been allocated to the HSE to establish a team to develop the registry, including a Clinical Lead, a Programme Manager, an Administrator/Co-ordinator, an ICT post and data specialists.

Recruitment of these essential posts is at an advanced stage. As of May 2025, the Clinical Lead, Programme Manager and Co-ordinator have been appointed and taken up post. A Data Scientist has been appointed and is expected to take up post in Q3 2025. The recruitment of an ICT data specialist is ongoing.

Once established, key priorities for the National Diabetes Registry team will include, setting a governance structure for the development and on-going management of the registry, liaising with existing data controllers/data sources to build the registry, establishing the prevalence of diabetes in Ireland and generating reports for policymakers, clinicians and people living with diabetes.
