247. To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the current number of work permits allocated for motor/auto mechanics; the number therein of the car mechanic quota and of the HGV/bus mechanic quota that have been issued; if he has any plans to review those quotas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As of the 20th May 2025 out of the quota of 600 permits allocated in respect of the above occupations 370 have been issued under soc code 5229.

There are currently no plans to review these quotas. However, where a sector wishes to have a quota extended, or a role fully removed from the ineligible occupations list (i.e. not subject to a quota), the sector should make an evidenced-based submission that demonstrates a continuing need for access to employment permits for the role. This should be supported by the department with lead responsibility for the sector. In the case of vehicle mechanics, the relevant department is the Department of Transport. The next review of the Occupations Lists will commence in the coming weeks.
