The report produced by the Department of Education in 2022 [Review of the awarding of professional added years by the University of Limerick during the period 2011-2017 and of the admission of two senior subsidiary company staff into the University of Limerick Pension Scheme] follows a report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) in 2018. The C&AG report had highlighted concerns on the level of professional added years awards made by UL.

In February 2025, this Department (DFHERIS) assumed full responsibility for the administration of pension matters within the Higher Education sector, as part of the broader separation work ongoing between DFHERIS and Education.

On foot of this transition, my officials wrote to UL in March 2025. The final report is currently the matter of discussions with the University and Department officials and my officials are due to meet with UL in the coming months to further progress this.
