Government's commitment to meeting industry skills needs is evident in the 139% increase in apprenticeship investment - from €142 million in 2019 to €339 million in 2025. The last five years have seen a 33% growth in the number of apprenticeship programmes available from 58 to 77.

The development of new apprenticeships follows a structured 10-step process overseen by the National Apprenticeship Office. All new programmes must be proposed by industry-led groups, supported by clear evidence of significant skills needs within their sectors and backed by practical employer engagement.

The expansion of apprenticeship courses provides a fast-track route to employment while delivering valuable qualifications, including into professions that previously were only available through attending university. This “earn while you learn” model in emerging skills areas significantly enhances both affordability and accessibility, particularly for a more diverse learner population. The continued growth in the number of programmes highlights the increasing popularity of apprenticeships as a pathway to training and qualification through employment.

We now have 52 consortia-led programmes designed specifically to service industry with a diverse offering across multiple sectors such as construction, ICT, Hospitality, Health and Social care that support Ireland both economically and socially. Substantial work is underway in expanding the offering with a further 29 programmes in development.

Four new apprenticeships were launched in 2024 across the private and public sectors: a Level 8 in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, a Level 6 Civil Service Digital Marketing programme, a Level 9 public sector Social Work programme, and a Level 9 Software Solutions programme. Apprenticeships under development include exciting new offerings such as a Level 8 Spatial Planner programme, a Level 6 Civil Service Business and Operations programme, Level 6 Beauty Therapy, Level 6 Robotics and Automation, and a Level 6 Software Tester programme.

Expanding and modernising the apprenticeship system is a priority for my Department, as we work to equip Ireland’s workforce for a future shaped by demographic shifts and the twin green and digital transitions.
