The Town and Village Renewal Scheme was introduced in 2016 and is one of a number of measures designed to rejuvenate rural towns and villages across Ireland in line with the objectives contained in Our Rural Future, Ireland's Rural Development Policy, and the Town Centre First policy. The 2022 Town and Village Renewal Scheme prioritised projects that bring vacant and derelict buildings back into use. In recognition of the urgent need to transform and regenerate town and village centres the Building Acquisition Measure was introduced to support local authorities to immediately acquire derelict or vacant buildings, for town regeneration purposes. Twenty-eight properties were purchased at a cost of €5.8m. The Measure continued in 2023 with a further 24 properties acquired for €4.6m.Under the 2025 scheme, I have included three funding streams for project applications, the Building or Land Acquisition Measure, the Main Scheme and the Project Development Measure.Properties purchased under the Building Acquisition Measures in 2022 and 2023 must form the basis of an application under the next two iterations of the TVRS Scheme or be developed for town regeneration purposes via the local authorities' own resources or another funding stream within 3 years.
