293. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the future plans for reform of the Road Safety Authority; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25483/25]

Last year, my Department commissioned an external independent review of the Road Safety Authority and on 5 November 2024, the Government approved publication of the Review and noted the proposal to radically reform the Road Safety Authority, with the aim of improving the delivery of both driver and vehicle services an operations on the one hand and the State’s promotional, education and awareness campaigns for road safety on the other.

A Departmental Group led by the Department and comprising relevant stakeholders is progressing this reform, which will be carried out on a phased and planned basis. The Group is tasked with developing a comprehensive implementation plan, including required legislation, to ensure the reform delivers road safety improvements. This implementation plan will be brought to Government for approval at the appropriate juncture.

A new Road Safety Communications Steering Group has also been established, led by my Department, to bring together the RSA communication leads, and other key stakeholders to ensure coordination across upcoming campaigns and programme of work for 2025.

The Department will also take full ownership of the oversight and coordination of the Government’s Road Safety Strategy, starting with the Phase 2 Action plan for 2025-2027, which will be adopted and published shortly.
