The Town and Village Renewal Scheme (TVRS) was introduced in 2016 and is one of a number of measures designed to rejuvenate rural towns and villages throughout Ireland. TVRS is administered through local authorities, who work closely with local communities and businesses to develop proposals that will bring long-lasting, positive impacts to rural towns and villages.

The 2025 Town and Village Renewal Scheme, which was launched on the 19 March last, intends to support the revitalisation of rural Ireland by focusing on stimulating town centre economic and social regeneration. This will be achieved through projects which support sustainable employment creation, town centre resilience and regeneration, enhancing our streetscapes, and bringing vacant and derelict buildings and lands back into use as community multi-purpose spaces through refurbishment and renovation.

The table below provides the cumulative funding allocated to each local authority since 2020 which includes over €109 million which has been allocated to 963 projects. It should be noted that this excludes further funding allocations that will be made available to local authorities in 2025 following receipt and assessment of applications received under the 2025 Scheme.

Additionally, in 2024 a series of measures were launched under the Town Centre First Suite of Supports to regenerate town centres. One such measure supports Project Development Measure (PDM) projects and on the 23 August 2024, funding of €2.6 million was announced to support 53 successful projects. Details of these projects under the 2024 PDM are available on my Department’s website on the following webpage: www.gov.ie/en/department-of-rural-and-community-development/publications/town-centre-first-policy/#town-centre-first-suite-of-supports-2024

The Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) provides funding for the development and enhancement of outdoor recreational infrastructure such as walking trails, cycleways, water-based recreation sites and mountain trails.

The table at the link below provides detail on the amount of funding granted through local authorities under ORIS in each year from 2020 to 2024. This information relates to the funding approvals per calendar year rather than each annual iteration of the scheme. For example, projects under measures 1, 2 and 3 of the ORIS 2023 scheme were formally announced at the start of 2024 and are included under the 2024 column.

No funding has been awarded in 2025 as of yet. The assessment process for the ORIS 2024/2025 scheme is currently ongoing and successful projects will be announced later this year.
