The EPA published Ireland's Final Greenhouse Gas Emissions 1990-2023 report in April 2025. The report sets out that total Green House Gas emissions from the Agricultural sector in Ireland in 2023 was 20.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents.

This represents a year-on-year decrease of 4.9% on 2022 of Green House Gas emissions from the sector. The most significant drivers of this reduction within the agricultural system were a decrease in the purchase of chemical nitrogen fertiliser by Irish farmers of 18%, a decrease in liming and a 2.4% reduction in Methane emissions from livestock.

The emission reduction figures for 2023 from the EPA’s Ireland's Final Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report show that agriculture in Ireland is on the right path and follows on from a further reduction in emissions in 2022.

It’s important that we continue to support Irish farmers and maintain this positive trajectory towards meeting our climate ambitions.
