I can advise the Deputy that in June 2024, the Council of the European Union adopted the decision to extend the Temporary Protection (TP) Directive until March 2026. This was an important demonstration of continued solidarity and support for Ukraine at a time when innocent civilians continue to be displaced as a direct result of ongoing Russian aggression.

Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BoTP) hold temporary permission to remain in Ireland, and this permission is renewable on an annual basis as long as the Directive remains in force. Under the Directive, those fleeing the war against Ukraine are entitled to apply for Temporary Protection in any Member State and to move from one Member State to another.

A project is currently underway within my Department to renew the permission of all Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection currently in the State. To renew their permission, applicants must apply and show evidence that they are currently residing in Ireland. It is envisaged that this project will be concluded later this year, and once completed, I will be in a position to outline the total number of BoTPs who are currently resident in the State.

While 3,598 permissions have been voluntarily withdrawn, the Central Statistics Office estimated that in June 2024, around 75% of those granted temporary protection were still in Ireland. This was based on activity associated with PPSN numbers.

Any BoTP that wishes to renew their permission must do so online. Further information regarding the renewal process is available on my Department's Immigration Service website at the following link:

The table below details the number of people who were granted Temporary Protection by my Department for each of the years 2022, 2023, 2024 and up to 18 May 2025.

Year Granted Temporary Protection
2022 69,664
2023 33,025
2024 10,489
2025 (to 18/05/2025) 2,862
Total (as of 18/05/2025) 116,040
