GPs are independent practitioners. It is a matter for a GP to use their clinical judgement to determine what is proper and necessary care for each individual patient. GPs are individually clinically responsible for their decisions.

318. To ask the Minister for Health the reason a person (details supplied) would be informed that an NHS diagnosis of endometriosis, backed by medical records, would not be accepted by their GP and the individual informed that they would have to obtain a diagnosis in the HSE system; and if this is standard procedure in such instances. Endometriosis is one of the most common gynaecological conditions in Ireland and affects approximately 1 in 10 women worldwide. It can be a difficult condition to diagnose and treat because of the variation of presentation, impacting the physical and mental wellbeing of patients at varying levels.
The National Framework for Endometriosis is being developed by the HSE’s National Women & Infant’s Health Programme (NWIHP) in conjunction with endometriosis specialists and gynaecologists, and in consultation with stakeholders, including the Irish Council for General Practitioners. The framework identifies how care for women with endometriosis will be delivered from primary care to local hospital care to specialist complex care by multidisciplinary teams.
With respect to the specific case in the details supplied, it is suggested that the patient concerned discuss the matter directly with their GP.
