Waterways Ireland is the North South Body responsible for the management and maintenance of more than 1000km of Ireland's inland waterways including the river Shannon, the Shannon Erne Waterway, Erne System, the Barrow, the Royal and Grand Canals and the Lower Bann Navigation.

Waterways Ireland is funded by my Department and the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland.

Works commenced to develop a new depot at Cappincur, Tullamore, Co. Offaly in January 2025, with an overall anticipated project completion date of Q2 2026. The new depot will service the Eastern Rural and Dublin Metropolitan Regions of Waterways Ireland's operations and become their centre of excellence for lock gate manufacturing and maintenance of fleet and plant.

A Masterplan for the existing harbour site in Tullamore has been developed in partnership between Offaly County Council and Waterways Ireland, funded through the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund. Further information regarding the Tullamore Harbour Masterplan is available to view on the website of Offaly County Council at: www.offaly.ie/tullamore-grand-canal-harbour-masterplan-link-to-plan/
