The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has offices in Ireland and in 102 diplomatic missions across the world. Across this mission network, the duties of personal assistant to the head of mission are undertaken by locally recruited colleagues, often in addition to other administrative and consular functions. In a small number of locations, civil servants are posted abroad to serve as personal assistant to an ambassador on a full-time basis as indicated in the table below.

Housekeepers are employed in a number of diplomatic missions to undertake duties associated with managing the official accommodation and ensuring that it is kept in good condition. Official accommodation is used for representational work such as dinners, lunches, receptions, seminars, and cultural events with the aim advancing Ireland’s values and interests. The whole-time equivalent (WTE) of housekeepers employed by the Department are set out in the following table.
