The Civil Registration Act 2004 sets out the legislation around the registration of births in the State. The information required for the registration of a birth includes the forename or forenames of the child as provided either online or to a local registrar by a parent or another qualified informant.
Section 25 of the Act legislates for any subsequent changes or amendments to a forename or forenames provided at the birth registration of the child. This section also states that where an amendment or correction has been processed, it is not possible to make any further changes, amendments or additions to the forename recorded.
Officers in the General Register Office have been in contact with the HSE staff who operate the in-person birth registration service locally. It is understood that the matter is being further reviewed and that the local HSE registration staff will be in touch with the persons concerned in relation to the matter with a view to resolving the issue raised,.
I trust this clarifies the matter for the Deputy.
