To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the recognition rates at first instance, and appeal stage, for all international protection applicants, for each month to date in 2025, in tabular form; if decisions made in any given month are indicative of a trend in decision-making; the current waiting time for appeals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. It is a central priority for me as Minister that our immigration laws are robust and enforced.

There has been a significantly increased investment into the international protection system, which combined with digitisation and process reengineering has facilitated a major increase in processing capacity. Accelerated processing has also been introduced for certain international protection applications including those from safe countries. I note that, since its introduction, the number of applicants has dropped.

The table below shows all International Protection Office (IPO) first instance decisions made in the first four months of this year and to 5 May.

All IPO first instance decisions other than RS grants can be appealed to the International Protection Appeals Tribunal (IPAT).

The below table shows the International Protection Office (IPO) IPAT decisions and outcomes issued in 2025 to April 30th.

The median waiting time from the date of application for a first instance decision to be issued from the International Protection Office (IPO) in 2025 is 17 months for applications considered under the normal procedure and four months for applicants subject to accelerated processing.

The 2025 median processing time for IPAT appeals is 13.2 Months as of April 25th.
