278. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he is aware that the National Transport Authority has allocated tens of millions of euro in public funding without adequate assurance that the funds were used for their intended purpose, specifically the transport of people using wheelchairs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport.

Under the Dublin Transport Authority Act 2008, the National Transport Authority (NTA) has statutory responsibility for promoting the development of integrated, accessible public transport networks and infrastructure. The NTA works with the relevant public transport operators, who have responsibility for day to day operational issues, to progressively make public transport more accessible.

I would also like to advise the Deputy that the remit of my Department and the NTA relates to 'open' public transport services. This means that dedicated and specialised transport services, for example disability transport services, are outside of that public transport remit.

In light of the NTA's responsibilities for accessible public transport services and infrastructure, I have referred your question to the NTA for direct reply to you. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a reply within ten working days.
