I propose to take Questions Nos. 1720, 1721, 1722, 1723, 1724 and 1725 together.
In 2023, a Ministerial Trade Mission took place in West Africa which focused on developing trade and economic relationships between Ireland and that region, specifically Nigeria and Senegal.
The trade mission included events in both Abuja and Lagos in Nigeria and Dakar in Senegal, including government-to-government meetings and Bord Bia and Enterprise Ireland engagements with leading customers for Irish agrifood and agri-tech. Meetings also took place with UN Food and Agriculture Organisation and UN World Food Programme in relation to food security and humanitarian needs in the region.
This trade mission was the first agrifood Ministerial Trade Mission to the West Africa region since 2015. No meetings were held by my Department with Government Ministers or Officials from Nigeria, Senegal and Ghana in advance of or following this Trade Mission in relation to trade issues.
At present, my Department has no plans for a future trade mission to West Africa.
The Deputy has raised a number of queries regarding Bord Bia’s planning for this trade mission. The information sought by the Deputy is an operational matter for Bord Bia. I have referred the Deputy’s question to Bord Bia as a state body under the aegis of my Department, and have requested that a response issue within 10 days.
