I can confirm that officials in my Department, including the Embassy of Ireland, Great Britain, are aware of this case.
I appreciate that the circumstances of this case are extremely difficult for the family and I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to them.
I understand that my officials have been in direct contact with the family and that they have provided advice and guidance to them.
My Department provides consular assistance to Irish citizens in difficult abroad within the remit of the Department’s Consular Assistance Charter. The provision of consular assistance is a cornerstone of the work of my Department and I place a strong emphasis on ensuring that all Irish citizens receive empathetic and responsive consular assistance. As the Deputy will appreciate, my Department is precluded from interfering in the judicial or legal matters of another jurisdiction.
I want to assure the Deputy that my Department stands ready to provide further consular assistance, where possible and appropriate, in accordance with the Consular Assistance Charter.
I want to, once again, extend my deepest sympathies to the family concerned. My thoughts are with them all.
