My Department published its most recent Climate Action Roadmap in September 2024, which includes details of how we plan to meet Ireland’s Climate targets by 2030 in line with the Public Sector Climate Action Mandate 2024. Most initiatives are low cost or cost neutral as they target our ways of working to ensure that sustainability is being built into the decision-making processes. Other initiatives, such as building and heating upgrades are delivered through the Office of Public Works, including the deep retrofit of one of our Departmental buildings, 6 Ely Place, under the Pathfinder programme.

Additionally, a cross-cutting modernisation initiative will introduce environmental benefits through the streamlining of operations and the removal of paper-based processes, for which funding has been allocated by the Exchequer. The Climate Action Unit of my Department oversees the development and implementation of the Climate Action Roadmap and provides climate awareness training for staff and leadership.

The agencies under the aegis of my Department have each developed their own Climate Action Roadmaps, some of which include large scale fleet decarbonisation programmes as well as building fabric upgrades which are funded through the annual budgeting process. Where necessary and appropriate, additional requests for funding under the National Development Plan are being submitted in support of these Roadmaps.

There are no private financial resources available to my Department in support of climate actions within the Justice sector.
