Schedule 1 of the Freedom of Information Act 2014 lists a board of management established under section 14 of the Education Act 1998 (other than a board of management of a school established or maintained by an education and training board) as an exempt agency. Therefore, such schools are exempt from the terms of the Freedom of Information Act.

Schools are subject to the GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018. An individual can submit a request for access to a copy of their personal data directly to a school. More information on subject access requests is available from the Data Protection Commission's website www.dataprotection.ie.
