There are currently 16 post primary schools across the country offering the Aonad model. There are also 11 post primary schools offering Sruthanna (streams). Both Aonaid and Sruthanna involve the teaching of post-primary subjects through Irish-medium education.
It is possible for any post-primary school patron to contact my Department to explore the establishment of an Irish-Medium unit in an existing post-primary school. Schools can also contact my Department to explore transitioning from English-medium to Irish-medium education should they wish to do so.
In addition to the Aonad/Sruth model, there are now 248 Gaelscoileanna and 50 Gaelcholáistí in operation throughout the country.
At an overall level, my Department promotes and supports various models of immersive Irish-medium education provision, including Gaelscoileanna, Gaelcholáistí, Aonaid and Sruthanna.
