Please find attached requested information for the years 2019-2023 inclusive, 2023 being the latest year we have class size data. We expect to publish class data for 2024-2025 in June 2025. The figures are based on mainstream classes in mainstream schools and were collated from the relevant Class Size tables published on our website and can be found at the link below; www.gov.ie/en/collection/class-size-information-at-individual-primary-school-level/.

The PTR (Pupil Teacher Ratio) is the average number of pupils per teacher in the school. This is calculated using the overall allocated number of teachers for the school and the number of students registered for that school. Teachers include classroom teachers, principals and support teachers.

The average class size is calculated from the published class tables, the total number of mainstream pupils divided by the total number of mainstream classes in a a school. Class data is extracted from the Primary Online Database where 1 mainstream class on POD = 1 mainstream teacher.

Average class sizes have reduced in both Cork Local Authority areas for the period 2019 to 2023.
