466. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he is aware of any plans to change or modify the current driving test to accommodate those who due to examination anxiety and nerves are not progressing to passing the driving test; if there are proposals to design a driving test more suitable for those with medical evidence of anxiety in examination situations, bearing in mind the requirement that people must be deemed qualified to drive safely; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Under the Road Safety Authority Act 2006, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has statutory responsibility for the National Driver Testing Service. This includes special accommodations to the driving test for candidates requiring such.
I have therefore referred the Deputy's question to the RSA for direct reply. I would ask the Deputy to contact my office if a response has not been received within ten days.
Pending this more detailed reply, I am aware the Authority has commenced a review of the overall driver testing curriculum. This review is to ensure that the service is fit for purpose, future proofed and can cope with changes in vehicle technology. International best practice and research will be considered in order to produce recommendations on improving driver education in Ireland.
