The Government is fully committed to supporting a significant expansion and modernisation of the EV charging network over the coming years. Having an effective and reliable charging network is an essential part of enabling drivers to make the switch to electric vehicles.

The expansion and upgrade of the public EV charging network is an effective way to help the transition to a zero and low emission vehicle fleet. It is important that the network is able to cater to as many vehicle types as possible, while also adhering to the latest technology standards in the EV market.

Providing a sustainable, low-carbon transport system is a key priority of the Department. Within the Climate Action Plan (CAP), fleet electrification is one of the two single biggest mitigation actions for domestic sectors and will provide the greatest share of transport emissions abatement to 2030. As such, it is important there is a seamless public charging network that will support user charging needs.

EV charging technologies are continually evolving and developing, and the Department continues to support the transition to EVs through incentives, investment in the recharging network, and keeping abreast of emerging charging standards and innovation. Exchequer investment in the charging network is delivered through a value for money approach, whereby the chargepoint operators or installers that provides the specified high quality charging provision at best value for money to the exchequer are awarded contracts. This approach is technologically open to new innovations and standards that emerge through the industry.
