Under the Free Fees Initiative the State provides funding towards the tuition fee costs of eligible undergraduate Higher Education students exclusive of the student contribution. The State pays the student contribution (in full or part) on behalf of students who qualify under the student grant scheme.

The student contribution was introduced in the 2011/12 academic year. The student contribution replaced the student services charge levied by Higher Education Institutions, which were up to €1,500 in 2010/11. The student contribution is currently €3,000 per annum.

The student services charge and the subsequent student contribution rate for each academic year since 2010/2011 are set out in the attached table.

In relation to undergraduate tuition fees, the position is that fee rates vary by course and by institution. The fee schedules of individual institutions are a matter for the institutions themselves as autonomous bodies. Neither my Department nor the HEA maintain a list of fee schedules across the sector and therefore a listing of undergraduate fee rates is not available.
