The National Cancer Registry (NCRI) was established in 1991 with a statutory obligation to collect and classify information on all cancer cases that occur in Ireland and has been collecting such data since 1994. This information will typically only be made available two to three years after the year of incidence, in keeping with international standards. This means that the data in this answer is provided for the most recent 10 years for which the NCRI have reliable data.

Below is a table of the number of tumours which received tumour-directed surgery in the first year of diagnosis, where surgery was part of the primary course of treatment, excluding Non Melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC).

This data does not including surgical procedures which were diagnostic/symptom relieving/reconstructive etc. The data does not account for surgeries that happen further along the cancer journey for recurrences or progression. It is also worth noting that the data provided is for the number of tumours treated with surgery, and a single person may have had more than one tumour treated. This is how the data is normally reported.

Year of diagnosis Surgery within 1 year of diagnosis, all invasive cancers (excluding NMSC) % of all invasive cancers (excl NMSC)
2011 9921 48%
2012 10065 48%
2013 10315 49%
2014 10444 48%
2015 10956 50%
2016 11340 50%
2017 11449 49%
2018 12021 50%
2019 12266 50%
2020 10676 47%
