275. To ask the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth the number of beneficiaries of temporary protection currently residing in the State; of that number, how many are in hotel and bed and breakfast accommodation, in tabular form; and if she will make a statement on the matter. According to figures from the Department of Justice, since March 2022 to date, temporary protection has been granted to over 115,000 people. I am advised by my colleague, the Minister for Justice, that as there are no routine immigration exit checks it is not possible to say how many beneficiaries of temporary protection are still here. While roughly 3,400 permissions have been voluntarily withdrawn, the Central Statistics Office estimated that in June 2024, around 75% of those granted temporary protection were still in Ireland. This was based on activity associated with PPSN numbers.
As of 30th March 2025, there were over 25,200 Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BOTPs) in State-contracted accommodation. The information requested regarding the number of BOTPs in hotel and bed and breakfast accommodation has been extracted from our systems and is outlined in tabular form below. It should be noted that the information provides an overview at a given point in time and is contingent on a number of factors that are subject to change including accommodation availability, providers in contract at any given time, configurations, transfers resulting from contracts ceasing etc.
I would like to clarify to the Deputy that this is the number of BOTPs in State-contracted hotels and B&B accommodation only. My Department would not be privy of how many BOTPs might be in private arrangements with providers of these types of accommodation.
Over 420 accommodation contracts ended in 2024 as demand reduced. Some of these will have returned to their former use, such as tourism. Once a contract has ended, the future use of the property is a commercial decision for the accommodation provider and my Department has no role in this matter.
