171. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government to outline the requirements for setting up and establishing a bird sanctuary, including any available funding options. [16122/25]

It is assumed from the reference to 'bird sanctuary' in the question relates to the establishment of a nature reserve.

Under the Wildlife Act, 1976, the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage may establish a nature reserve where certain considerations are met. These are set down in sections 15 and 16 of the Act. The provisions of section 17 and 18 may also be of relevance to the question. An unofficial consolidation of the Act is available at:

Please note that if the question relates to the establishment of a rehabilitation facility for birds, then a number of licences are required under the Wildlife Act 1976 and contact should be made with the Wildlife Licensing Unit via wildlifelicence@npws.gov.ie.
