Mr Apostolos Tzitzikostas is the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism and it is notable that this is the first time that ‘tourism’ appears in a Commissioner’s title.

The Commissioner’s tourism priorities include:

  • The promotion of a resilient and competitive tourism sector, in line with the EU Agenda for Tourism 2030.
  • The development of a Sustainable Tourism Strategy following engagement with relevant stakeholders, with scope to include focus on effective sustainable destination management, simplification and facilitating access to EU tourism funding, and the promotion of alternative destinations and tourism products to maintain the EU’s position as the world-leading tourism destination.
Responsibility for the tourism area will shortly transfer by Government Order to my colleague, Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke, TD, who plans to attend the next meeting of EU Tourism Ministers in Poland on 23-24 June 2025. This will be a first opportunity to engage with Commissioner Tzitzikostas in person.
