The key factor for determining the level of staffing resources provided at individual school level is the staffing schedule for the relevant school year and pupil enrolments on the previous 30 September. There is no change to the mainstream staffing of the school referred to by the Deputy for the 2025/26 school year.

The staffing arrangements include a provision whereby schools experiencing rapid increases in enrolment can apply for additional permanent mainstream posts, using projected enrolment. The staffing process also contains an appeals mechanism for schools to submit a staffing appeal under certain criteria to an independent Primary Staffing Appeals Board.

Information and application forms are available in Circular 0011/2025 on the Department website.

The key factor for determining the level of staffing resources provided at individual school level is the staffing schedule for the relevant school year and pupil enrolments on the previous 30 September.

The school referred to by the Deputy was due to have a mainstream teaching post suppressed for the 2025/26 school year due to falling enrolments.

The staffing process contains an appeals mechanism for schools to submit a staffing appeal under certain criteria to an independent Primary Staffing Appeals Board. The school referred to by the Deputy submitted an appeal to the March meeting of the Appeals Board and the school was successful in its appeal. The school has been notified that it will retain its current mainstream staffing for the coming school year.
