The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of Garda business under section 26 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended), which includes the purchase and allocation of all equipment for the service. As Minister, I have no role in these independent functions.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that An Garda Síochána purchased ammunition in 2017, and it was discovered during testing that the waterproof lacquer sealant on the primer pocket affected its functionality. I am further advised that there was no risk posed to any members of An Garda Síochána as the ammunition was not issued to members and was withdrawn fully. The manufacturing company replaced the ammunition in 2018 at no additional cost.
