The role of the President of the General Assembly is a pivotal one within the UN system.
The election of the President of the General Assembly is scheduled to take place on 2 June 2025 through a vote in the UN General Assembly, with a simple majority required. If only one candidate has been nominated before the vote, then the President of the General Assembly may be elected by acclamation.
Under the current system of rotation, the President of the General Assembly for the 80th Session will come from the Western European and Others Group (WEOG). Ireland is aware of the nomination referred to and will consider it carefully.
