The Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 provides a comprehensive and modern legislative framework within which to address issues relating to Animal Welfare. The different aspects of the act are kept under constant review, having due regard to experience gained in administering the Act.

The Programme for Government places a positive emphasis on animal welfare and specifically commits to the continued robust enforcement of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013.

This is in line with consistent policy statements made by successive Ministers since the Act came into operation.

All aspects of Animal Health and Welfare legislation will be considered in bringing forward any proposals to amend the Act.
