The Programme for Government contains a commitment to support and enhance the Courts Service Capital Programme for new builds and refurbishments. I am advised that Galway Courthouse will be included in a submission being prepared by the Courts Service for a revised NDP, which is being developed as part of the Programme for Government.
I am further informed that the Courts Service has engaged with the Land Development Agency (LDA) and Galway City Council (GCC) to explore the potential of including a new courthouse in the future development on the Dyke Road. High-level design options are being considered to assess the suitability of this venue.
More recently, the Courts Service has engaged in discussions with Galway County Council about an alternative site, with the County Hall carpark identified as a potential location. This presents an opportunity for collaboration with Galway County Council, leveraging the two-acre-site for shared use.
Both site options offer significant potential for developing a modern, purpose-built courthouse in Galway.
