I had a constructive call with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on 4 March. I congratulated him on his recent appointment and we discussed our mutual appreciation for the strength of the US-Ireland relationship. I took the opportunity to convey Ireland's gratitude for the important bipartisan contribution that the United States has made to peace, reconciliation and economic prosperity on our island, over many decades.

Our discussion also covered a range of pressing global issues of shared concern, including Ukraine and the Middle East. I made the Secretary of State aware of the package of support for Ukraine that Ireland has provided. I emphasised that peace, sovereignty and territorial integrity for Ukraine are a high priority for Ireland, and our EU partners.

Additionally, I conveyed Ireland's appreciation for the extensive work by the United States on the ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Palestine. In doing so, I highlighted that it is vital that the ceasefire is consolidated, that humanitarian aid urgently needs to flow to all civilians in Gaza and that all hostages are released.

I highlighted the many vibrant Saint Patrick's Day celebrations across the United States this month as a testament to the strength of these US-Ireland connections, including in Secretary Rubio's home State of Florida.

I look forward to building on this productive discussion and to working with the Secretary of State on matters of mutual interest and priority, including meeting in person.
