292. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if it is intended to update the requirement to have an insurance disc printed in colour displayed on a vehicle considering the advances in technology and the prevalence of insurers issuing renewal packs by email, given that this requirement dates back to 1986. The Deputy may be aware that my Department announced last year the intention to replace windscreen compliance discs, including insurance discs, with fully digital versions by 2026.

Until that transition is complete, however, it remains a legal requirement that any vehicle driven on public roads in Ireland display a valid insurance disc with a white background and a green band along the left-hand side. A driver who fails to display a disc meeting these statutory colour requirements is committing an offence and risks incurring a Fixed Charge Notice (FCN) of €60.
