1910. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if the rules for the SUSI grant scheme could take into account the transience of the rental market and in particular have cognisance of the fact that families availing of the defective concrete blocks scheme may have to relocate whilst construction works are ongoing at their home and this may temporarily change the distance from which the student (applicant) lives from their institution. As the Deputy may be aware I recently finalised the Student Grant Scheme and Student Support Regulations 2025 which provides for different levels of maintenance grants at adjacent and non-adjacent rates.
The current qualifying distance of 30km for the higher non-adjacent rate of maintenance grant is intended to provide additional support to those students who may be living away from home and takes into account a reasonable radius within which students may commute on a daily basis.
In certain circumstances the Student Grant Scheme, under the review of eligibility clause, allows for a change of circumstance in respect of a change in a student's normal residence.
The decision on eligibility for student grant applications is a matter for the centralised grant awarding authority, SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland).
SUSI assess all applications for a change of circumstance on a case by case basis and individual students should contact SUSI directly in respect of their own case.
