CORU is Ireland’s multi-profession health and social care regulator. CORU’s role is to protect the public by regulating the health and social care professions designated under the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005 (as amended), including setting the standards that health and social care professionals must meet to be eligible for registration and maintaining registers of persons who meet those standards.

In March 2015 the Social Care Workers Registration Board (SCWRB) was established under the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005 (amended) to regulate the profession of social care worker.

The Social Care Workers Registration Board at CORU has statutory responsibility for the:

  • Establishing and maintaining a Register of members of the profession.
  • Assessing, approving and monitoring training courses for the health and social care professions under the Act.
  • Establishing the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics and standards of performance to which social care workers must adhere.
CORU and the SCWRB have worked diligently to approve education courses and standards to ensure high standards of professional conduct, education, training, and competence amongst those working in the profession.

The register opened on 30 November 2023, and the title of social care worker will become officially protected on 30 November 2025. During these 2 years that a register is open, existing practitioners can apply for registration during the transitional period, including completing the grandparenting process, if a registrant is eligible. With an estimated 10,000-15,000 people working in this profession, it will be the largest profession regulated to date.Processing applications for registration is progressing and has been greatly aided by CORU’s new application and records system (Thentia system) which is playing an important role in delivering smoother processing within a shorter timeframe.
