264. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he is satisfied that the price of a train ticket from Cork to Dublin is double that of a train ticket from Galway to Dublin, despite there only being a difference of around 40 km in the length of the journey; if an assessment of train fares has recently been carried out by his Department; if that assessment will be made available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport; however, I am not involved in the day-to-day operations of public transport.
The issue raised by the Deputy in relation to train ticket pricing is a matter for the National Transport Authority, in conjunction with Irish Rail. Therefore, I have referred the Deputy's question to the National Transport Authority for direct response to the Deputy.
