Special advisers are appointed to me as Tánaiste, Minister for Defence and also as Minister for Foreign Affairs. Up until the formation of new government in January of this year, all advisers were employees of the Department of Foreign Affairs and as such, their salary and expenses were administered by that Department, other than in relation to travel specially related to Defence.

The expenses incurred by special advisers in the period since March, 2020 to date from the Department of Defence Vote is set out in the table below.

Year Mileage Subsistence
Commencing March 2020 0 0
2021 0 0
2022 0 0
2023 0 0
2024 €470 €174.55
2025 0 0
