All former members of the Defence Forces can gain access to their military records (albeit that third party information will be redacted to protect the personal data of others) by submitting an application to the Freedom of Information Office (FOI) Office or the Data Protection Office (DPO) of the Defence Forces. An application may be made to either office and the personal file will be provided to an individual in line with the relevant Act (FOI Act or Data Protection Act). The Defence Forces FOI Office can be contacted at foi@defenceforces.ie. The Defence Forces DP Office can be contacted at dpo@defenceforces.ie. Older military records that have been transferred to Military Archives may be accessed by the individual (or if deceased by their families) by making an application to Military Archives.
