In December 2023, the Minister for Health established the National Rare Disease Steering Group which was tasked with developing a new National Rare Disease Strategy for Ireland. The Steering Group are expected to finalise the Strategy in the coming weeks, following which it will be presented to me for consideration before the Strategy is officially launched.Following the launch of the Strategy an Implementation Plan will be developed that will outline the steps and actions required to implement the Strategy's recommendations, including the key Departments and agencies involved in implementation. An Implementation Oversight Group (IOG) will also be established to oversee the implementation of the Strategy. The IOG will include senior responsible and accountable personnel across the Department of Health, HSE, and include patient representatives, with appropriate links to industry partners and other Departments and stakeholders as required.
