The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of Garda business under section 26 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended), which includes all operational policing matters. As Minister, I play no role in these independent functions.
I am informed by Garda management that assessments of the impact of criminal feuds on community safety are undertaken at local level, and resources are deployed based on a risk assessment and the development of a policing plan to repel threats to individuals or to property.
Community policing is at the heart of An Garda Síochána, and all Gardaí have a role to play in community policing in the course of carrying out their duties.
An Garda Síochána delivers an effective community policing service, responsive to the needs of a modern and diverse community under the following six principles: Community Engagement, Community Partnerships, Problem Solving, Crime Prevention, Law Enforcement and Accountability.
The Deputy may wish to be aware that the introduction of Community Impact Assessments is at a very advanced stage and will address issues of significant concern in communities, giving them a stronger voice in relaying the impact of serious incidents in their communities.
Divisional Crime Prevention Officers are available to assist any individual who feels they would benefit from crime prevention advice. Their details can be located on the Garda Website.
