1194. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality if he will provide the annual spend in 2021, 2022 and 2023 by An Garda Síochána on the rental and leasing of vehicles; the absolute number of rented and leased vehicles in the Garda fleet in 2021, 2022 and 2023; the number of those were BEVs and PHEVs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. While the Garda Commissioner is operationally responsible for the Garda fleet, I am assured that Garda management keeps the distribution of resources, including vehicles, under continual review. This is considered in the context of crime trends and policing priorities, to ensure the optimum use of these resources.

The Government is committed to building stronger, safer communities, and strengthening An Garda Síochána is at the core of that. We will continue to provide An Garda Síochána with the resources it needs to ensure communities around Ireland are safe and feel safe. This is reflected in the unprecedented allocation of over €2.48 billion to An Garda Síochána, in Budget 2025, a 27% increase since 2020. This funding allows for the continued recruitment of Garda members and staff.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that the below table outlines the amount spent by An Garda Síochána in 2021, 2022 and 2023 on rental and leasing of vehicles, and the total number of vehicles rented in each of those years. The number of vehicles hired would have fluctuated during the year as some would have been very short-term hires whiles other leases were for longer. There were no Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) rented in this timeframe.

Cost and number of leased vehicles 2021-2023

Year Cost € Number of vehicles
2021 222,865.67 46
2022 119,913.86 40
2023 166,531.63 96
