1157. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the number of Garda vehicles, by type, assigned to each station in Donegal; the number of these vehicles that have gone above the mileage agreed that a Garda vehicle is at end of life; the number of the vehicles currently non-operational; the number of requests submitted for a new vehicle, in tabular form; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Under the Garda Síochána Act 2005, the Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána. This includes the distribution of resources, including the Garda fleet, across the various Garda Divisions and National/Specialist Units. As Minister, I have no direct role in this matter.

An allocation of €2.48 billion was provided in Budget 2025 and this is allowing for sustained investment in recruitment, equipment, technology, and vehicles.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that at the end of January 2025 there were 3,628 vehicles attached to the Garda fleet, the highest total of vehicles ever in use by An Garda Síochána. This represents an increase of over 16% since the end of December 2020.

The table below, which was provided to me by the Garda authorities, sets out the number and type of vehicles attached to the Donegal Division at the end of February 2025.

Vehicle Type Cars Vans Motorcycles 4 x 4 Others Total
Number of vehicles 60 16 4 7 1 88

There are currently four vehicles attached to the Donegal Division over the agreed mileage limit. These will be processed for removal from the fleet shortly.

There are no non-operational vehicles in the Donegal Division.

All requests for new vehicles are submitted through the relevant Regional Office. Fleet Management do not keep figures in relation to these requests.

I am further informed that the purchase and allocation of vehicles by An Garda Síochána is made on the basis of identified operational demands, the availability of resources and is reviewed on a continual basis.
